The Arc Board of Directors
The Arc of Harris County (AoHC) Board of Directors comprises leaders from the nonprofit and for-profit sector who are dedicated to the organization’s mission. Serving on the AoHC Board of Directors is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about strengthening leadership and governance in the nonprofit sector. The AoHC Board of Directors are compassionate and open-minded and believe that all board members’ opinions and suggestions hold value as a leader.
Board Member Expectations
- Regular attendance at board meetings; Hybrid-virtual and in-person meetings; 3 in-person and 3 virtual meetings
- Contribute both as a planner and a policy maker
- They are expected to review financial reports in advance of board meetings and to otherwise help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities.
- Become well informed on all agenda items. They are expected to read board materials in advance of board meetings and to come prepared to ask questions and participate in discussions.
- Contribute knowledge and express points of view
- Accept majority decision even when in the minority
- Assume leadership roles in agency fundraising campaigns and events
- Board members are counted on to play an active role in securing the financial resources necessary for AoHC to achieve its mission. Board members are expected to leverage personal relationships and connections to help the development committee and staff identify and solicit potential funders, as well as directly invest in AoHC’s work by making a personal contribution each year.
- Board members are expected to serve on one or more projects/committees of the board and to actively participate in project work.
- Assume board leadership responsibilities as requested and as possible
- Board members are counted on to responsibly represent AoHC to their respective communities and to advocate for AoHC’s mission, programs, and services as appropriate. Represent the agency at AoHC and community events, organizations, and with individuals
- Be informed about the agency’s programs, policies, and services
- Be informed about the needs of the community and constituents
- Be aware of developments in the IDD and neurodiverse fields
- Follow conflict of interest and confidentially policies
- Support the Executive Director and help to monitor performance
- Assist with evaluation of the board’s performance on an annual basis
- The Board of Directors currently meets every other month, virtually and in-person, typically the third Tuesday of those months at 4:00pm subject to change as necessary. Please note: Board of Directors meet via the Zoom platform in March, July, and November and meets in-person in January, May, and September. In-person meetings are held at The Arc offices located at 9401 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77074 in The Harris Center Building.
- Board terms last for two years and may be eligible to serve further terms
